AVI
AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is the most common format for audio/video data on computers. The Microsoft AVI file format is a RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format) file specification used to capture, edit, and play back audio-video sequences.
AVI was developed for playback of audio and video from hard disks and CD-ROMs on personal computers. AVI can work with text subtitles, as AVI-Mux GUI and DVobSub/VSFilter prove. If you want to cut subtitle or join subtitle of AVI videos, you have to make the entire subtitle data blocks be interpreted, processed and rebuilt.
But AVI file format lacks time stamps embedded in the audio and video streams and it is not well suited for streaming video playback over Internet. So AVI is now considered to be an outdated container format. Microsoft has provided applications for converting AVI to its new ASF format with improved support for video over Internet and networks.
However, AVI is compatible with many existing video editing and playback software, so it’s still welcome by some people. AVI is usually considered to have problems with large files. But that’s not true. AVI supports files larger than any current hard discs. However, the firmware of many hardware MPEG4 players cannot handle AVI files larger than 2 GB.
DVD + R
DVD-ROM has data which can only be read and not written, DVD-R and DVD+R can be written once and then functions as a DVD-ROM, and DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, or DVD+RW holds data that can be erased and thus re-written multiple times.
DVD-Video and DVD-Audio discs respectively refer to properly formatted and structured video and audio content. Other types of DVDs, including those with video content, may be referred to as DVD-Data discs. Most DVDs are of the same dimensions as compact discs (CDs) but store more than six times as much data.
